Repetition always entails variations

Anaïs Abreu D’argence

Anaïs Abreu D'argence created this book after she explored The Restless Dead: Necrowriting and Disappropriation by Cristina Rivera Garza. The result is a handmade three-dimensional poetry book that keeps printing "Repetition always entails variation" until the words become a black square. With this technique, the artist represents the addressed phrase in an actual exercise where every page is distinct.

The books were printed and hand-bound by the artist. The English edition was produced in 2021 and is bound in silverish fabric with a brass lock. The Spanish edition was made in 2022; here, the accordion binding is more evident, and the cover presents a brass-colored letter “r” over a shinny-cream fabric.

La Dieresis Editorial Artesanal, 2021 & 2022.

A book can also exist as an autonomous and self-sufficient form, including perhaps a text that emphasizes that form, a text that is an organic part of that form: here begins the new art of making books. (Ulises Carrion)
