The New Art of Making Books
The New Art of Making Books
By Ulises Carrión
Published by Errant Press
The New Art of Making Books is a bilingual edition of El Arte Nuevo de Hacer Libros, the influential essay by artist and writer Ulises Carrión. First published in 1975, Carrión’s text redefined what a book could be—not just a container of words, but a space for structure, sequence, and meaning beyond narrative.
This edition is both a tribute and a challenge. Carrión famously said that a book is not a bag of words, so we decided to put that to the test—literally—by sewing our edition into a tote bag. It’s a playful contradiction, an object you can carry, read, and reflect on, all at once.
Carrión’s radical vision continues to inspire Errant Press and countless book artists around the world. With this edition, we honor that legacy while reimagining the form of the book itself.
